Helen, thy beauty is to me
Like those Nicean barks of yore,
That gently, o’er a perfumed sea,
The weary, wayworn wanderer bore
To his own native shore.
On desperate seas long wont to roam,
Thy hyacinth hair, thy classic face,
Thy Naiad airs have brought me home
To the glory that was Greece
And the grandeur that was Rome.
Lo! in yon brilliant window-niche
How statue-like I see thee stand,
The agate lamp within thy hand!
Ah, Psyche, from the regions which
Are Holy Land!
………………………………………………………………..Edgar Allan Poe
While Borges and Rodman both agreed Neruda did write some best poems and Poe, on the other hand, is minor.
Chance failed me to raise my objection, but the disagreement would like to have a stake here to proof. And the French are with me.
This really is a lovely portrait, Tom–very well done!
Thank you so much for saying that…

Regarding the photo, the lady is gorgeous! Who is she?
Both poets are great, but between Neruda and Poe, I like Neruda better. 😉
I like Neruda’s poems too.
Regarding the photo, may I urge you to look at the granular texture of granites… 😉
The photo is beautiful, yes…and your response above as to who the woman is…”may I urge you to look at the granular texture of granites….” also beautiful.
I hope my word is appropriate to express my idea
that the granite is as beautiful as Helen…
I don’t think the words were wrong, but I think the person you responded to had asked you who the woman was…who she is. I took your words to mean that she might have been part of you, your daughter maybe. If you were deflecting the question, you did it beautifully. 🙂
I almost fall into a swoon with your surmise. 🙂
I don’t mean to deflect the question.
I just want my dear readers to pay some attention on the granite.
We couldn’t miss the granite, Tom…but the woman is so beautiful that she cannot be ignored…whoever she is. 🙂
Oh, Scott, I just could not tame my jealous heart with all the eyes staring at Helen….:)
Well that makes sense, Tom! Good for you…she is a beautiful woman, whoever she is! Oh, and the granite is pretty, too. 🙂
I admire your sense of humor…give you good night
Thank you, Tom…and good night to you, too. 🙂
Her dark, eyes, gazing so directly into the lens, reveal the loving soul within.
The granite, though much older, reveals its own soul in colors and textures.
Helen’s beauty and that of the granite are a few of the gifts we have been granted by our Creator.
Ng Tom, a wonderful photo!
I appreciate your judicious interpretation….
